Rena Bumgardner Smith

Obituary: Rena Bumgardner Smith, 87, of Kannapolis went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, December 28, 2016 at her residence following a period of declining health. She was born November 22, 1929 in Gaston County, NC a daughter of the late John Fred and Bernice Willard Bumgardner. Rena was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. She was a cosmetologist with a shop in her home until her retirement in 1982. She enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. Survivors include her husband of almost 60 years of marriage, Earl Smith of the Home, three daughters; Lynn Gilmore of Davidson, Susan Johnsen (Robert) of China Grove, and Sandy McVay (Bob) of Kannapolis. She is also survived by five grandchildren; Dallas Read, Autumn Schackert (Kyle), Bob Johnsen (Caroline), Tiffany Long (Drew) and Patrick McVay (Kacey), eight great-grandchildren and a sister, Dorothy Willard of Millers Creek, NC. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Friday, December 30, 2016 at Whitley's Funeral Home Main Chapel conducted by Rev. R.J. (Beaver) Hammond. The family will receive friends from 1:00 P.M. until 2:00 P.M. prior to the service. At other times the family will be at the residence. Interment will follow at Carolina Memorial Park.
