Robert “Bobby” Smith, 55, of Kannapolis passed away, Thursday, October 7, 2021 with his family by his side, at Atrium Health Cabarrus.

He was born June 5, 1966 in Greensboro, NC to Ronald Smith and the late Jean May Smith.

Those left to carry on his legacy include his wife Susan Tucker Smith, son Caleb Benjamin Smith (Maggie May), father Ronald Smith, sister, Martha McDonald (Keith), nieces and nephews: Josh, Ashley, Samantha, Alyssa, Destiny, Katie, Dakota, and Tori.

Bobby recently retired from Cabarrus County as the Emergency Management Director. He served more than three decades to our country, our state, and our community. Bobby was a U.S. Navy veteran, and a  leader in emergency management whose public service has spanned more than 34 years. His career began in 1985 as a Telecommunicator and Emergency Medical Technician for Guilford County. He continued on to serve as a firefighter, fire inspector, and Fire Investigator within Greensboro Fire Department. In 2001 Bobby accepted a position in Cabarrus County as a Fire Marshall, later becoming the Emergency Management Director.

Most importantly Bobby valued his relationship with the Lord and others were always able to see God through him. He was a servant of God and loved to show this through ministering, teaching and doing things for others. Bobby loved spending his time with his family and friends but especially loved going to the movies with his son and wife. He loved all animals, especially birds and was fond of the family dog, Bella. Bobby also loved spending time with family and friends in Emerald Isle, NC.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM Sunday October 17, 2021 at First Baptist Church of Kannapolis with Rev. Tom Cabaniss officiating. Military honors to be provided by the Navy and a celebration of life fellowship immediately following the service.

In lieu of flowers, gifts in memory of Bobby Smith may be directed to support The Telomere Center at the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center. Please make checks payable to Johns Hopkins University.
