Robert Allen Shinn

Robert Allen Shinn, 76, of China Grove, peacefully passed away December 1, 2022, at his home.

Mr. Shinn was born December 6, 1945, in Salisbury, NC, the son of the late Dr. G.C. and Opal Bradley Shinn.  He was a 1964 graduate of South Rowan High School, and received a BS in Textile Technology from NC State University in 1968. At that same time, he was a commissioned Second Lieutenant in the US Marine Corps, receiving his Navy Pilot’s Wings in December of 1969, in Kingsville, TX.  During his military career, he piloted A-4 jets and the OV-10 Forward Air Control Aircraft. He also took part in Exercise Reforger in 1976, as a Forward Air Controller/Laison Officer under NATO Forces.  After departing the military, Mr. Shinn worked 28 years at Cannon Mills, Plant 1, Fieldcrest Cannon and Pillowtex, as Product Manager in marketing. In 2010, he retired from Funtees Cooperation.

In his free time, he enjoyed golfing, reading, music trivia and watching old movies, and was a member of First United Methodist Church in China Grove.

Family members include his beloved wife of 56 years, Judith Shinn; his sons, Robert Lee Shinn and Charles Eric Shinn (Georgina); brother, Dr. John B. Shinn (Patricia); sister, Catherine Rost (Timothy); grandson, Colin Shinn; granddaughter, Ashley Shinn; brother-in-law, Butch Deal (Cindy); 4 nieces and 4 nephews.

Memorials services to remember and give thanks for Mr. Shinn’s life will begin at 2:00 PM Sunday, December 11, 2022, at Whitley’s Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by Rev. Brian Farmer.  The family will speak to friends following the service.
