Obituary: Robert Joseph Terpening, of Concord, died peacefully and comfortably on Sunday, February 24, 2013, after a hard- fought struggle with lung disease and other chronic health issues. Mr. Terpening was born in Poughkeepsie, New York, in 1936, and descended from some of the first New Amsterdam Dutch to settle around the Hudson Valley centuries ago. As a child, he caught rides to school with Eleanor Roosevelt. In high school, his teams set crew records on the Hudson River. At different times during his life, he lived in Scotland, Miami, and San Francisco, and traveled extensively, before retiring to North Carolina. As a CPA, he was known for his integrity and work ethic. He was devoted to his family and animals. His grandchildren, Ellie and William, brought him particular happiness during his last years. He is survived by his wife, Judith; his son, William; three sons from a previous marriage, Robert, Michael, and Christopher; and stepdaughter Amanda. His funeral service will occur at Whitley's Funeral Home in Kannapolis this Thursday at 1 pm. The family prefers a donation to the American Lung Association instead of flowers.
