Robert “Bob” Hinman Blackman, 79, of Concord, went to his heavenly home on Tuesday, September 27, 2022.
Bob was born on February 17, 1943 in Norwich, NY to the late Kenneth Blackman and Julia Hinman Blackman. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Shirley Johnson.
Bob honorably served his country in the United States Army and served in Korea during the Vietnam War. He worked as a Warehouse Manager for Proctor & Gamble for 26 years in Norwich, NY. Bob was incredibly active in the community there, including serving as a volunteer fireman for Maydole Hose Company and the Norwich Fire Department, was Assistant Band Director for Norwich High School, and served as Town Justice for 20 years. Upon retirement, Bob and Sue moved to Concord, NC where he continued his service to the community. He was proud to be one of the founding members of the Cabarrus County Veterans Honor Guard. He absolutely loved serving grieving families. He also enjoyed hosting at Olive Garden for the past 13 years and was a member of American Legion #523 in Harrisburg. He was a faithful member of Mt. Olivet UMC. He touched many lives along the way and his memory will never be forgotten.
Those left to cherish his memory include his beloved wife of 52 years; Susan Miller Blackman; son, David (Jaclyn) Blackman; daughter, Julia Whitney; three grandsons, Thomas Whitney, Jacob Blackman, and Joshua (Rebecca) Blackman; sister, Sylvia Davis, and mother-in-law, Doris Miller.
The family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 9, 2022 at Whitley’s Funeral Home. The funeral service will follow and begin at 3:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Whitley’s Funeral Home with Rev. Neal Jones officiating. Full Military Honors will be presented by the Cabarrus County Veterans Honor Guard. Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, October 10th at Salisbury National Cemetery, 501 Statesville Blvd., Salisbury NC 28144.
The family wishes to express gratitude to the loving congregation of Mt. Olivet UMC, and to the caring and kind staff of Five Oaks Retirement Home and Atrium Health Cabarrus.
