Obituary: Roger James Johnson, Sr., age 74, passed away on Wednesday, July 1, 2015 at Genesis Healthcare, Salisbury, NC after a period of declining health. He was born October 23, 1940 in Ashe County, NC, the son of the late Leslie Vance Johnson and Maggie Weaver Johnson. Roger was employed with the former Cannon Mills Company, Plant One, Sewing Room for over thirty years until his retirement. He held his church membership at Calvary Baptist Tabernacle, Salisbury, NC and a former member of Landis Baptist Church, Landis, NC where he was a RA leader, drove the church bus, a youth leader, and active in other phases of church activities. His family fondly remembers his love of woodworking and gardening. In his last few years he was an active Atlanta Braves fan and loved to put together puzzles. In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by his wife, Barbara R. Johnson who died Dec. 22, 2013; two sisters, Eileen Honeycutt and Ann Goodman. The funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM Friday, July 3, 2015 at Whitley's Funeral Home Main Chapel, Kannapolis, NC officiated by Rev. Steve Holshouser and Rev. Chris Goodman. Burial will follow at West Lawn Memorial Park, China Grove, NC. The family will receive friends from 12:30 to 2:00 PM Friday at the funeral home prior to the service. Survivors include his children, Tammy Hilburn & husband, Steve of Kannapolis, NC; Beth Kenerly & husband, Dwight of Gold Hill, NC; Robert Ross of Landis, NC; and James Johnson & wife, Wendy of Rockwell, NC; nine grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren.
