Roger Douglas Smith, 82 of Concord went to be with the Lord on August 29, 2024, following a period of declining health.
He was born March 20, 1942, in Wayne County, Pa. the son of the late Clarence Herman Smith and Evelyn Mae Smith. Roger served in the US Army before marriage in Korea at the 38th parallel manning a 50-caliber machine gun, where he met his life-long friend Chingo.
Being a loving husband, he always wanted to make sure his wife was taken care of. Roger was a member of Life Point Concord Nazarene Church for forty years, where he served as treasurer and dessert tester at all potlucks. He was also a very active member of the Gideons where he served as treasurer, he estimated that over the years he had given out over one million bibles. He enjoyed sharing his faith, fishing, telling jokes, scaring nurses and heckling his grandkids.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, September 7, 2024, at Life Point Church of the Nazarene, 2520 N./c. Hwy 49South, Concord, NC 28027 conducted by Pastor Harold Davis, Pastor Dodd Parrish and Pastor Kyle DeLong. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the funeral service. Interment will follow in Carolina Memorial Park with military graveside rites conducted by the US Army.
Family members left to cherish his memory include his wife of 64 years, Joyce Marie Buchanan Smith; their children Glenn Smith (Angella) of Kannapolis and Lana Hinnant of China Grove; his eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; brothers Corbett (Jarry) Smith of Kannapolis, Gerald (Carolyn) Smith of Kannapolis, Lowell (Phyllis) Smith of NY and his sister Virginia (Bud) Purdy of Concord. He was preceded in death by sister Regina (Ray) Shaw.
