Obituary: Kannapolis, NC- Roland Louis Metcalf, age 78, died Sunday, August 2, 2009 at the Bob & Carolyn Tucker Hospice House, Kannapolis, NC after a period of declining health. He was born September 17, 1930 in Gaston County, NC, the son of the late Ruben R. Metcalf and Annie Wellman Long. He had served in the U.S. Army with various tours of duty in Germany, France, Southeast Asia, Korea, Thailand, Dominican Republic, Fort Rucker, Alabama, Ft. Bragg, NC, and Ft. Knox, KY for 21 years. He also worked for the former Cannon Mills Company, Plt.#4 Instrument Dept. until his retirement in 1992. He was a life member of the V.F.W. Poston-Perkins Post 8989 and a member of Allen-Graham Masonic Lodge # 695. He was an active member of Center Grove Lutheran Church, Kannapolis, NC where he had served on church council, property committee, served as an usher, & active with the Golden Nuggets Senior's Group. In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by two brothers, Charles Metcalf and Vandel Metcalf. The funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, August 6, 2009 at Center Grove Lutheran Church, Kannapolis, NC officiated by Rev. Loyd Ginn. Burial will follow at Center Grove Lutheran Church Cemetery, Kannapolis, NC with military rites by the N.C. Army National Guard. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. Wednesday, August 5, 2009 at Whitley's Funeral Home. Survivors include his wife, Martha Carter Barringer Metcalf; four daughters, Barbara Thompson, Slocomb, AL, Christel Josey & husband, Wayne of Kannapolis, NC, Annette Lee & husband, Robert of Hurst, Texas, and Sylvia Trimble & husband, Steve of Glenmoore, Pennsylvania; one son, Michael Metcalf & wife, Tracey of Mt. Pleasant, NC Seventeen grandchildren; one great-grandchild; one brother, Terry Metcalf & wife, Mavis of Concord, NC; one sister-in-law, Hedy Metcalf of Kannapolis, NC; one sister, Phyllis McCarty & husband, James of Kannapolis, NC Two step-sons, Luther Barringer & wife, Debbie of Newton, NC and Gary Barringer & wife, Lisa of Rockwell, NC.
