Obituary: Ronny Lee Cauthen, age 65, of Landis passed away Sunday, February 9, 2014 at W. G. Bill Hefner VA Med. Center in Salisbury after a period of declining health. Funeral services will be held at 12:00 noon Monday, February 17 at Sloan Lake Community Church with Rev. Zac Sizemore officiating. Burial will follow at 2:00 PM Monday at the National Cemetery in Salisbury with full military honors conducted by the Army National Guard and Rolling Thunder. The family will receive friends at Whitley's Funeral Home from 7:00 to 9:00 PM Sunday, February 16 at other times they will be at the family residence. Ronny was born on May 28, 1948 in Cabarrus Co., son of Lewis T. and Anna Mae Shoe Cauthen. He served as a tank commander in the US Army during Vietnam, receiving a Purple Heart with 1 Cluster. Ronny later drove a truck for Yellow Freight for many years, logging 3 million miles without an accident. Ronny belonged to Teamsters Local #71 and road with Rolling Thunder Chapter #2. He loved bluegrass music, cook-outs, fishing and spoiling his family. In addition to his parents, Ronny is preceded in death by his brothers, Bobby, Bill, Jackie and Danny Cauthen and 2 sisters, Ruby Gibson and Hazel Hagler. He is survived by his wife of 13 years, Cynthia Varner Cauthen of the family home, his daughter, Melissa "Missy" Cauthen Howell and husband, Jarrod of Salisbury, his step-children, SSG Jonathan L. Miller and wife, Kalie of China Grove, PV2 Tyler A. Greene of Ft. Bragg NC, Mindy Miller and fiancé, Russ Odum of Greenville SC and TSGT Eric Brian Miller and wife, Bonnie serving in Turkey. Ronny is also survived by 2 sisters, Margie Whittington of Concord and Mildred Allman of Landis and 10 grandchildren and 1 great-grandson.
