Obituary: Rosa Revels Winfree died in her home on June 8th in Kannapolis, NC after a long battle with Bile Duct Cancer. Mrs. Winfree was born on August 12, 1938 to Lonnie and Rosa Revels. She graduated from the University of North Carolina at Pembroke in 1959. She married Frank Winfree in 1960 and the couple eventually settled in Charlotte, NC, where Rosa taught 5th grade at First Ward and later became the Director for the Title IV Indian Education Program for the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School System. In 1979, Rosa earned a Master Degree in Reading Education from Appalachian State University. Rosa, Lumbee, was appointed to the Advisory Committee of the White House Conference on Indian Education by President George W. Bush in 1991. Her passion for her people, women and children, led her to found American Indian Women of Proud Nations after her retirement in 1998. Recently, Mrs. Winfree was awarded "The Order of the Long Leaf Pine," for her years of service to her community. Mrs. Winfree is survived by her husband, Frank Winfree, her daughter, Lori Winfree (Chuck); her son, Bob Winfree (Mary); her six grandchildren, Laci Hammond (Jason), Trey Winfree (Noreen Johnson), Kaitlyn Locklear (Al), Cole Schaber, Ross Schaber and Morgan Winfree; her six great-grandchildren, Alex, Madelyn, Meeywi, Liam, Wyatt and Lucas; and her sisters, Del (Neal) Hartis and Theresa (Bobby) Locklear. She is preceded in death by her siblings; Florence Ransom, Cloris Wells, Lonnie Revels and Donald Godwin. A Memorial Service will be held on June 17 at 11 AM at Trinity United Methodist Church in Kannapolis, NC. The "Rosa & Frank Winfree Scholarship" has been established at The University of North Carolina at Pembroke for those wishing to contribute.
