Obituary: Roy Paul Pittman, age 75, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, July 28, 2014 on arrival at Novant Health Rowan Medical Center, Salisbury, NC. He was born August 6, 1938 in Chesterfield County, SC, the son of the late Claude Pittman and Elizabeth Oliver Pittman. He moved to live in Kannapolis in the early 1960's. Paul worked at Rowan Mills for most of his life. Later, he opened Paul's Barbecue in Pageland, SC for several years. He was known in the Kannapolis area as the "watermelon man" for many years selling melons out of his truck. His family fondly remembers his love of driving all over the place. In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by his first wife, Minnie Joplin Pittman; and seven siblings. A graveside service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, July 31, 2014 at Carolina Memorial Park, Kannapolis, NC officiated by Rev. Bobby Sutherland. The family will receive friends at the graveside after the service. Survivors include three sons, Randy P. Pittman & wife, Robin of Troutman; Robert L. Pittman & wife, Valerie of Landis, NC; and Kenneth E. Pittman of China grove, NC; seven grandchildren; one brother, Johnny Pittman of Wilmington, NC; and two sisters, Willie McCorkle and Bonnie Gibson, both of Ft. Mill, SC. Memorials may be made to Independence Square Freewill Baptist Church, 1615 Independence Square, Kannapolis, NC 28081 where he spent many years.
