Ruth Evelyn Smith Brooks

Obituary: Ruth "Evelyn" Smith Brooks, age 84 of Alexander Rd. in Concord died Thursday, January 14, 2010 at Genesis Elder Care of Salisbury after a period of declining health. Funeral services will be at 2:00 PM Saturday, January 16 at Whitley's Funeral Home Annex Chapel with Rev. Dave Cash officiating. Burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 1:00 to 2:00 PM prior to the service, at other times they will be at daughter, Marie Wall's home at 1014 McLain Rd. in Kannapolis. Evelyn was born February 9, 1925 in Cabarrus Co. to the late Arthur Wade and Clara Barnes Smith. She was a life long area resident and long time member of Midway United Methodist Church. Educated in Cabarrus Co. Schools, she graduated from HS. In early years she worked for Cannon Mills Co., Johnson Motor lines, Met. Life Co. and Cabarrus Co. Clerk of Courts office. Evelyn was a proud member of the Order of the Eastern Star, A Grand Chapter Officer, and was past Worthy Matron of the Miriam Winslow Eastern Star Chapter and the Ada Chapter-Mooresville. Evelyn also enjoyed her volunteer work with the Cabarrus Co. Schools teaching writing and as a Poll worker with the Democratic Party. She loved her trip to Hawaii and raising her Daschunds. Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband, Cyrus Henry Brooks, Jr. and was the last of 4 sisters. Her survivors include her daughter, Marie Brooks Wall and husband, Jerry of Kannapolis, her son, Cyrus Brooks III of Concord, her granddaughter, Crystal Bebber and husband, Jason of Salisbury, her grandson, John Absher of Mt. Pleasant and great-grandchildren Katelyn and Elijah Bebber. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Helen Brooks of Charlotte.
