Ruth Pressley Orland

Obituary: Ruth Pressly Orland, 86 of Kannapolis died Thursday, May 17, 2012 at the Bob and Carolyn Tucker Hospice House, following a period of declining health. Mrs. Orland was born on September 11, 1925 in Gaston County, a daughter of the late Laura Watt and Dr. John Mason Pressly. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by two sisters, Laura Rebecca Riggs and Betty Mears. A funeral service for Ruth will be held on Monday May 21, 2012 at 2:00 PM at All Saints Episcopal Church with Rev. Nancy Cox officiating. The family will receive friends following the services at the church. Whitley's Funeral Home is assisting the family. Ruth taught school in Kannapolis City Schools for a brief period of time and was the first manager of the Cannon Visitors Center and remained there until her retirement. She was a member of All Saints Episcopal Church where she had taught Sunday school class, served on the building committee, and was a member of the vestry. Ruth was also a volunteer for Meals on Wheels for many years, and volunteered at the Kannapolis Food Pantry. Ruth was a good wife, mother, grandmother, and a loyal church and community servant who will be sadly missed by family and friends. She is survived by her husband Joseph, two daughters, Laura Orland Murdoch (Haynes) of Salisbury, and Scotty Orland Martin (Freddie) of Raleigh, five grandchildren, Joe & Seth Murdoch, Alice Murdoch Shannon (Gordy), and Jake and Anna Martin, and a sister, Marjorie Litzelman (Karl) of Red Bank, NJ. In lieu of flowers, the family request memorials be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of Cabarrus County, 5003 Hospice Lane, Kannapolis, NC 28081 or All Saints Episcopal Church, 525 Lake Concord Rd., Concord, NC 28025.
