Ruth Martin Rowland Owings

Obituary: Ruth Martin Rowland Owings, age 97, of Kannapolis died Tuesday, July 22, 2014 at Best of Care - Kannapolis, after a period of declining health. Her funeral will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, July 26 at Whitley's Funeral Home Main Chapel with Rev. Mike Hubbard officiating. Interment will follow at Carolina Memorial Park. Her family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the funeral at Whitley's Funeral Home. Ruth was born March 11, 1917 in Cabarrus Co., a daughter of the late Samuel Cole Rowland and Bertha Jane Calloway Rowland. She was a lifelong area resident and educated in Concord City Schools. Ruth was a long-time member of Brookdale Baptist Church and in earlier years she was employed by Cabarrus Co. Dept. of Social Services. Ruth enjoyed fishing at Holden Beach and Tucker Town. Ruth was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and sister. She will be dearly missed. In addition to her parents, Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, Thurman T. "Buck"" Owings in 2003 and also by 3 brothers and 2 sisters. Those left to cherish her memory include her daughters; Ann O. Spry (Ray) of China Grove, Jane O. Schaefermeyer of Salt Lake City, UT and her son, Richard Cole "Rich" Owings (Lisa) of Asheville, her sister, Raynelle "Nan" Cooke of Albemarle. She is also survived by 9 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and was looking forward to her 1st great-great-grandchild. Her family also wishes to acknowledge a special family friend, Joe Hatley.
