Sally Jean Russell

Obituary: Kannapolis, NC- Sally Jean Carrouth Russell, 80, passed away peacefully and surrounded by love at the Tucker Hospice House on Thursday the 16th of November. Born in Cabarrus County in 1937 to the late Lessie and Horrace Carrouth, Sally shared very humble beginnings with 11 other siblings. She spent many years in the weave room of Cannon Mills and many more years as a crafter, traveling all over NC and surrounding states selling various hand-crafted items with her beloved husband, Wayne. Sally was first diagnosed in 2003 with cancer and was told she would have 6mths to live, and live she did! She picked up a paintbrush at the age of 67 and found a love for painting while undergoing treatment for the first time. Sally had an undeniable, God-given talent that many have had the honor of witnessing. Her artwork can be seen in the homes of her family, friends and many others. When she wasn't in her paint room, she could be found in her flower garden, the aisles of Hobby Lobby or keeping the roads hot with family and friends. Sally had an infectious laugh and a witty sense of humor that would bring happiness to the worst of days. Her love for her family and friends was unmatched and her persistence to create never ceased. Sally is survived by her Husband, Richard "Wayne" Russell, sons Bobby Horton (Becky), Jack Horton, and Rick Russell (Selena) all of Kannapolis, daughter Debbie Atwell (Charles) of Moravian Falls, Grandchildren Erica Earnhardt-Wilson (Jeremy), Corey Atwell (McKenzie), Justin Russell (Becca), Kristan Horton (Caleb) and Great-Grandchildren Lexia, Sybella and Emerick. And her siblings, Shirley Lawing (SC), Iva Stortini (NY), Virginia Carter (SC), Mildred Ferrell (SC), Marilyn Carrouth and Donald Carrouth (NC). Sally is preceded in death by her daughter Dena Russell Earnhardt. A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, Nov. 25th from 3-5pm in the Annex building at Whitley's Funeral Home. Memorial donations may be made to The Tucker Hospice House in Kannapolis.
