Obituary: Samuel John Thomas, 89, of Kannapolis passed away on Sunday, January 18, 2015 at Universal Healthcare in Concord. He was born December 19, 1925 in Anson County, the son of the late Columbus Claude Thomas and Lessie Taylor Thomas. He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Thomas. He retired from Cannon Mills as a machinist. He was a member of Eastwood Baptist Church. He was a veteran of the US Army serving during WW II and the Korean War where he received a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star. He enjoyed fishing and making bird houses. He loved sitting on his front porch and was a member of the "porch sitters association". Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, Jan. 24, 2015 at Eastwood Baptist Church officiated by Rev. Randall Ritchie. Burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Park with military honors by the Cabarrus Veterans Honor Guard. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 PM Friday at Whitley's Funeral Home. He is survived by three daughters, Kathy T. Denney (Larry), Debbie T. Tovornik, Tammy T. Watson, 5 grandchildren, Jason Stirewalt (Kim), Kristen Nunn and fiance' Michael Massie, Michael "Bud" Nunn, Zachary and Faith Watson, 2 great grandchildren, Shelby Stirewalt and Sophia Tovornik, two brothers, Herbert Thomas, Billy Thomas(Racheal), two sisters, Beuna Yost and Joyce Rozack. Memorials may be made to Eastwood Baptist Church, 320 Cook St., Kannapolis, NC 28083.
