Obituary: Sarah Frances Middleton Smith, 82, of Kannapolis went to be with her Lord on Tuesday, July 16, 2013. She passed away at the Bob & Carolyn Tucker Hospice House with her family by her side. Her death follows a period of declining health. Mrs. Smith was born in Florence County, SC, on August 9, 1930, the daughter of the late Aubrey Carl and Fannie Lee Campbell Middleton. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by 2 brothers; Herbert and Hubert Middleton. Sarah was a long time member of Calvary Baptist Church, where she served faithfully in the children's department for 38 years and was an active member of the Women's Missionary Union. She was a dedicated wife, loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother; and a wonderful example of Christian faith, hope and love. Along with her husband, Harry Smith, she was co-owner of Red's Oil Company and Red's Tire Service where she handled many of the bookkeeping and administrative duties. She was an excellent cook who enjoyed sharing recipes and preparing meals for her family and friends. She loved birds, flowers and took great pride in her beautiful rose and flower gardens. Left to cherish her memories are her husband, Harry L. "Red" smith, with whom she would have celebrated 67 years of marriage on August 16 of this year; 2 daughters, Joyce Smith Dayvault and husband Robert of Kannapolis, Harriett Smith Helms and husband Jamie of Locust; son, Wayne Smith and wife Charlee of Kannapolis; grandchildren, Scott Dayvault, Mark Dayvault and wife Sherra, Kristen S. Sheets and husband Jeff, Alison and Emily Strickland, and Logan Helms; great grandchildren, Brandon, Austin and Carson Dayvault, and Harrison Sheets; brothers, Edward Middleton and wife Ann of Darlington, SC, Donald Middleton and wife Jean of Florence, SC; sister-in-law, Joyce G. Middleton of Kannapolis. A service to celebrate the life of Mrs. Smith will be held at 2:30 PM on Friday, July 19, 2013 at Calvary Baptist Church with Rev. Max Smith and Rev. Darrell Coble officiating. Burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the church prior to the service from 1:00 to 2:15 PM. Whitley's Funeral Home is assisting the Smith family.
