Obituary: Shelby C. "Smokey" Hilton, 87, of Kannapolis died Thursday, February 9, 2012 at the Bob and Carolyn Tucker Hospice House. He was born June 16, 1924 in Memphis, Tennessee, the son of the late Wiley and Mary Potts Hilton. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Doris Webster Hilton in 1986. He was owner/operator of Hilton's Garage in Kannapolis for 62 years. He was a veteran of the US Marine Corps serving during WW II in the South Pacific Theater. He was a life member of the VFW Poston-Perkins Post 8989. He was a member of Central Baptist Church where he had served as Sunday school teacher for 40 years, deacon of the church, usher, member of the nominating and finance committees and worked with the youth and senior groups of the church. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM Sunday, Feb. 12, 2012 at Central Baptist Church officiated by Rev. Curtis Parker. The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 3:00 PM prior at the church. Burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Park with military honors by the US Marine Corps. At other times, the family will be at the home. He is survived by his wife, Voida Belle Earley Hilton, three daughters; Barbara Gaskins (Jerry) of Kannapolis, Becky Cline (Sonny) of N. Myrtle Beach, SC, and Peggy Barnette (Jimmy) of China Grove, two sons; Terry Wayne Hilton (Kelly) of Concord and Michael Dean Hilton of Kannapolis, a step-daughter, Pam Lambert Thorpe (Mack "Rambo"), his brother R.J. Hilton of Jacksonville, Fl., 11 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.
