Obituary: Stella Godwin Oxendine, 97, of Landis, formerly of Pembroke, passed away on Thursday, February 19, 2015 at Liberty Commons. She was born October 29, 1917 in Robeson County, the daughter of the late William Henry Godwin and Florence Amelia Ransom Godwin. She was the youngest of seven children; five brothers-Purcel, Leonard, Garfield, Rudolph and Lankford Godwin and one sister, Mrs. Rosa Dimple Revels, all pre-deceased her. She was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin Oxendine and two children, Donald Godwin and Kitty Oxendine. She is a member of First Baptist Church of Pembroke where she sang in the choir. After moving from Pembroke to Landis in the late 90's, she attended Blackwelder Park Baptist Church. As we look back we remember that she was an accomplished seamstress and wonderful cook. She enjoyed wearing pretty clothes and jewelry. She always had a beautiful garden and loved to travel. To many people she was known as Ms. Stella or "Granny" not just to her own grandchildren and great- grandchildren. Those left to cherish her memory are, daughters, Maudie Summerville (Ed) of Charlotte, Mary "Hun" Bare (Robert) of Landis, daughter- in- law Jackie Godwin of Pembroke, grandchildren, Terry Oxendine, Donna Oxendine (Timmy), Chris Summerville, Tammie Sampson, Sonya Webb (Rick), Alvinia Oxendine (Michael), Meredith Smith (Jarrod), Chris Gaydos, Jeff Bare, Sherre Brogdon (Bob), Kim Parnell (Dickie), great- grandchildren, Desmond Sampson, Dustin Godwin, Desarae Locklear, Austin Summerville, Breanna Oxendine, Noah Gaydos, Zach Summerville, Ty Webb, Austyn Oxendine, Stella Drew Smith, Nora Mason Smith, Lauren McKnight (Jimmy), Christopher Brogdon (Leigh), Shawn Parnell, Jason Parnell, Logan Parnell, great- great -grandchildren, Raylee, Rylee and Rayana Godwin, Jayden Oxendine, Nala Sampson, Aiden and Luke McKnight, Serenity, Ethan and Evan Parnell. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Sunday, February 22, 2015 at Pembroke First Baptist Church, 302 Union Chapel Rd., Pembroke, NC. Burial will follow at Bear Swamp Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Whitley's Funeral Home from 3 to 5 PM Saturday, February 21, 2015.
