Steven Murray

d. November 23, 2016

Obituary: KANNAPOLIS - Steven Dallas Murray, 64, of Florida Avenue, died Wednesday, November 23, after a period of declining health. A lifelong native of Kannapolis, he steadfastly lived life on his own terms, with his own clock, and with a will and independence unmatched by those around him. Known as "Cricket" to his oldest friends, he lived his entire life in the Royal Oaks area, except for a brief stint in Raleigh. Over the years, he worked briefly in a cotton mill, in sales, as a bartender and in the electrical trade. Mostly, he just worked at being Steve Murray, and everyone who really knew him knows what that meant. He particularly liked being Uncle Steve to his nieces and nephews and their children. The pets that lived with him over the years, raccoons and dogs alike, led the good life, often better fed and cared-for than himself. His sense of humor and laughter will be missed. Born in Cabarrus Memorial Hospital on February 9, 1952, he was the son of the late Betty Etta Shinn Murray and Wilbur Bryant "Pete" Murray. He also predeceased by his younger brother Thomas Bryant Murray and an infant sister, Linda Kay Murray. Survivors include three sisters, Rena Carol Rowell (Jim) of Cullowhee, Debra Sue Plott (Steve) of Concord, and Tammie Marie Lathom (Doug) of Kannapolis. Also surviving are nieces and nephews Jennifer Rowell Tyler (Robert) of Raleigh; Heather Rowell of Houston, Texas; A.J. Rowell (Stephanie Sue), of Webster; Matthew Plott (Amanda), of Concord; Hillary Plott, Myrtle Beach, S.C.; Amber Lathom Yow (Joel), of Chicago; and Cameron Lathom, of Kannapolis; and grandniece Anna Tyler, and grandnephews Peter Tyler and Henry Tyler, all of Raleigh. Services will be held at 1:00 PM Saturday, November 26 at Whitley's Funeral Home. The family will receive friends the hour prior, from 12:00 to 1:00 PM at the funeral home. Burial will follow the funeral at Carolina Memorial Park. Online condolences may be left at www.whitleysfuneralhome.com.
