Obituary: Newport News, VA Steven Craig Sloop, 72, of Newport News, VA and formerly of Kannapolis NC, died June 30, 2017 at the St. Francis Nursing Center in Newport News after a period of declining health. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 PM Friday, July 7 at Carolina Memorial Park with Rev. John Futterer officiating. Family will receive friends at the graveside. Steven was born February 13, 1945 in Kannapolis, the son of the late James Craig Sloop and Edith Karriker Sloop. He graduated from A.L. Brown High School in 1963, and from NC State in 1967 with a degree in Electrical Engineering. Steven worked as an electrical engineer for Newport News Shipbuilding until he retired. He loved attending concerts and music in general. He enjoyed going to family reunions, gardening and taking pictures of live music and the fans. Steven was called "the Band's Best Friend". He supported every local country band in the Hampton Roads area, in addition to those in Nashville, TN. For 20 years Steven served the community via his concert-listing website MEONA.NET, which he faithfully managed full-time during his retirement years. Steven was loved, admired, and respected, and his memory will be cherished by his many friends and family. He is survived by his sister: Linda "Jo" Shirley of Hickory NC; his nephew David L. Shirley (Minna) of Portland OR; his niece Valerie K. Reid (Travis) of McLeansville NC, and three great-nieces: Alexandria, Danika, and Isis, as well as numerous cousins.
