Thelma Chastain

Obituary: Thelma Wells Chastain, age 89, of Kannapolis, passed away Monday, April 30, 2018, at Transitional Health Services of Kannapolis, after 4 months of declining health. Her funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM Wednesday, May 2 at Grace City Church (formerly First Freewill Baptist Church of China Grove - 405 N Bostian Street, China Grove, NC 28023) with Rev. Mark Murphy officiating. Burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Park in Kannapolis. The family will receive friends at the church from 12:00 to 1:00 PM on Wednesday prior to the funeral. Thelma was born February 7, 1929 in Mecklenburg Co., a daughter of the late Jake M. and Jenny Austin Wells. In addition to her parents, Thelma was preceded in death by her husband, James Chastain; her son, Ray Lowe; her sisters, Naomi W. Leach and Mary W. Simpson and her brothers, James and Jake (Junior) Wells. Thelma was a lifelong area resident and a member of First Freewill Baptist Church of China Grove. Thelma retired from China Grove Cotton Mill after 35 years of service. She is survived by her step-daughter, Kathy Allen (Herman), her grandson, Todd Lowe and a great-granddaughter. Thelma is also survived by her sisters, Margie Gibbs and Virginia Hinson and numerous nieces and nephews.
