Vera Sutton Helms

Obituary: Kannapolis, NC- Vera Grace Sutton Helms, age 94, died Thursday, October 25, 2012 at her home after one year of declining health. She was born September 9, 1918 in Chesterfield County, SC, the daughter of the late William Sutton and Lillie Jordan Sutton. She was the last survivor of eleven children. Vera was employed with the former Cannon Mills Company, Plant # 1, Sewing Room for 36 years until her retirement in 1983. She was a member of New Hope Lutheran Church, Kannapolis, NC where she had taught children's and adult Sunday School classes for years, sang in the choir, active in the Joyful Morning Circle, served on the church council, and active in various other phases of church activities. She is fondly remembered for her love of cooking and gardening. In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by her 1st husband, Paul Gibson; her 2nd husband, Robert Helms; a daughter, Lillie Foil; a son, Larry Gibson; two step-sons; and two granddaughters. The funeral service will be held at 3:00 P.M. Saturday, October 27, 2012 at New Hope Lutheran Church, Kannapolis, NC officiated by Rev. Kim E. Trabold. Burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Park, Kannapolis, NC. The family will receive friends from 1:00 to 2:30 P.M. Saturday at Whitley's Funeral Home prior to the service. Survivors include her son, Mitchell Gibson & Linda Gibson of Kannapolis, NC; her daughter, Sherry Schoolfield & husband, Victor of Myrtle Beach, SC; her step-daughter, Judy Riley & husband, Fred of Mt. Pleasant, NC; thirteen grandchildren; twenty-three great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren.
