Vernon Lee Orton

May 11, 1946 — March 22, 2025

Vernon Lee Orton, age 78, passed away peacefully at home on March 22, 2025, surrounded by loved ones. Born on May 11, 1946, in Lawrenceburg, Tennessee, Vernon lived a full and colorful life marked by devotion, laughter, music, and love.

He spent his early years in Illinois, graduating from East Peoria High School before proudly serving his country in the U.S. Army from 1966 to 1968. After returning home, Vernon began a 34-year career as an inspector at Caterpillar, where he worked diligently until his retirement in 1998. Following retirement, he moved back to Tennessee with his beloved wife, Tammy, where they lived for 24 years before settling in North Carolina together in 2022.

A truly gifted musician, Vernon had an extraordinary ability to play just about any stringed instrument, though the dobro held a special place in his heart. He brought joy to many as a member of several bluegrass, gospel, and country bands over the years and was honored to lead the music ministry at Edwards Grove Community Church in College Grove, Tennessee. Music wasn’t just a hobby—it was part of his soul.

Above all else, Vernon was a firm believer in Jesus Christ. His faith was a guiding light in his life and could be seen in the love he poured into his family, his music, and his community.

Vernon was a master crossword puzzler, a daily Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune watcher, and the reigning family Sudoku champ. He was also known to hustle a game or two of pool with ease and skill, and he absolutely loved the open road on his Harley Davidson.

He was a jokester through and through, always pulling pranks and cracking jokes—especially when his grandchildren were around. There was nothing he loved more than hearing their laughter. He had a deep love for southern cooking, especially banana pudding and grilled peanut butter sandwiches.

Married to the love of his life, Tammy, since 1995, their nearly 40-year journey together was one of unwavering love and companionship. Their bond was made even stronger by their shared love for their dog, Lucky Girl, whom they rescued a year and a half ago. Vernon and Lucky Girl were inseparable.

Vernon was rarely seen without a splash of purple—his favorite color—and was known for his signature purple socks. His presence lit up every room, and his spirit left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him. He is survived by his devoted wife, Tammy Orton; his children, Ron Kettle, Missy Laster (Kris), Jennifer Griffith (Chris), Curtis Stone (Karliana); his grandchildren, Christopher, Ryan, Katarina, Marissa, Mitchel, Alexis, Niena, Morgan, Kyle, Tommy, Kaden, and Kody; seven great-grandchildren; brothers Kim Orton (Candy), and Duane Orton.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lee and Louise Orton, and his sisters, Betty and Vicki. Vernon’s legacy of love, faith, and music lives on in the hearts of those who knew him. He will be deeply missed, but his songs, stories, and smile will echo forever in our memories.
