Virginia Powlas Gordon

Obituary: Virginia Powlas "Snake" Gordon, 88 died Friday, January 13, 2012 at her home after years of declining health. Mrs. Gordon was born February 25, 1923 in Rowan County to the late George Chambers Powlas and Nora Frances McCulloh Powlas. She was a graduate of Woodleaf High School Class of 1941; she retired from Cannon Mills in 1988 after 45 years of service in the #1 Weave Room; and she was a member of Jackson Park United Methodist Church and a member of the Gladys Nelson Sunday School Class. She loved working in her backyard, caring for grandson, and her great grandchildren. Everyone that ever came in contact with her said she had the most beautiful smile. Virginia was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Troy B. Gordon who died in August of 1973; sisters, Margaret A. Cashin and Clara E. Sain; brothers, Milton "Red" Powlas, George Howard Powlas, and Herman Powlas. Survivors include her daughter, Jane Sloop and her husband Gene. Grandson, Brad Sloop; great grandchildren, Cameron Sloop, Alysandra Sloop, and Ethan Sloop all of Kannapolis; sister-in-law, Mary Powlas of Salisbury; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins who she loved dearly; Special friends and neighbors, Sammy and Lisa Gulledge, Am and Jimmy Miller, Maizie Loggins all of Kannapolis, and Aida Karat of Salisbury. A memorial Service will be held 1:00 p.m. Friday, February 24, 2012 at the Whitley's Funeral Home Annex Chapel with Rev. Dr. Patti Tillman Simpson officiating. The family will receive friends following the service. Special thanks to Cabarrus County Hospice and Palliative Care; a special nurse Bobbie Jo McDonald and all the wonderful care givers that treated her with so much respect in her final months. Memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice.
