Obituary: W.D. Sherrill, 93, of Kannapolis went to his heavenly home surrounded by his family on Monday, April 20 2015 at Brookdale Place Clare Bridge, after a period of declining health. His funeral will be held at Whitley's Funeral Home Chapel at 11:00 AM Thursday, April 23 with Deacon Bud Baker officiating, burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at Whitley's Funeral Home the hour prior to the funeral from 10 to 11:00 AM, at other times the family will be at 6435 Miller Rd. in Kannapolis at the home of his daughter, Janis Laws. W.D. was born June 16, 1921 in Catawba Co., a son of the late Joe and Ava Howard Sherrill. He was a longtime area resident and devoted member of Calvary Fundamental Baptist Church of Landis. W.D. was a proud veteran of the US Army, serving in the Medical Corps during WWII. He was employed by Cannon Mills Co. for 41 years, working in Plant #1 Spinning room #2, until retiring in 1987. During this time he also worked as Night Watchman for many years. W.D. was a very loving Daddy to his daughters and a wonderful Pawpa. He enjoyed gardening and had a special passion for growing tomatoes and giving them away. In addition to his parents, W.D. was preceded in death by his wife, Peggy Atwood Sherrill, who passed in 1992, his son-in-law, Adrian Hall, his brother, J.C. Sherrill and 2 sisters, Edith Murdock and Annie Mae Peterson. Those left to cherish his memory include his 2 daughters; Janis Laws (Jesse) and Sandy Wilhite (Ray), both of Kannapolis, his 4 grandchildren, Christy Benson and Ashley Goodman (Robin), both of Concord, Kevin Laws (Beth) of Clanton Alabama and Keith Laws (Cathy) of Sherrills Ford, his 7 great-grandchildren include Holly Benson, Tanner and Connor Goodman and Faith, Brooke, Jessi and Jackson Laws and step-great-grandson, Scott Sastoque, and many loving nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank the Alzheimer Care staff of Clare Bridge and Hospice, especially RN Amanda Page.
