Obituary: Kannapolis, NC William "Bill" Paul Ashley, 84, of Kannapolis passed away March 19, 2018 at the Tucker Hospice House after a short battle with cancer. He was born January 30, 1934 in Somerset County, Maryland, a son of the late Paul Brown Ashley and Lena Lucille Blevins Ashley. He was preceded by his wife of 42 years, Gelene Hutchins Ashley in 1999. Bill had formerly worked at Cannon Mills and Cone Mills. He was a veteran of the US Army where he served in Germany. Bill was a lifelong member of Trinity United Methodist Church where he was a member of the Friendship Bible Class for over 40 years. Bill was an avid vegetable and rose gardener. He also was a charter member of the Piedmont Singing Men. In earlier years, he enjoyed coaching and refereeing basketball, softball and teeball teams through the YMCA. He was an avid Carolina Tarheels fan. Funeral services will be held at 11:30 AM Friday, March 23, 2018 at Trinity United Methodist Church officiated by Rev. Kirk Tutterow, Rev. Tracy Love and Rev. Michael Fongemy. Burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Park. The family will receive friends prior from 10:00 to 11:30 at the church. Bill is survived by daughter, Anne Dehlin (Ed), son, Chris Ashley (Dina), grandsons, Jason, Andrew and Daniel Dehlin, Blake and Kaeden Ashley, brother, Jerry Ashley (Lucy) and sister, Anita Little (Danny). In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church, Piedmont Singing Men and/or a veterans group of one's choice.
