Obituary: Kannapolis - William Edward Gibbons, 86, of Kannapolis died May 7, 2009 at The Haven at Highland Creek in Charlotte. He was born February 24, 1923 in Cabarrus County the son of the late Roscoe H. Gibbons and the late Daisy Irene Queen Gibbons Walter. He received his public school education in the Kannapolis city schools. He graduated from J.W. Cannon High School, Class of 1940. He received a B.A. degree in Mathematics from Catawba College in Salisbury and a Masters degree from the UNC-Chapel Hill. He also had many additional semester hours of graduate work in advanced mathematics from UNC-Greensboro. During WW II he served in the US Army Air Corps in Italy with the 15th Army. He taught high school mathematics for six years in the Rowan County and Charlotte systems and for twenty-seven years he was a faculty member of the Catawba College mathematics department. For seven years he served as chairman of the math department. Through the years he designed and built many single family houses. Construction was his primary interest after his retirement from teaching in 1986. He was a good husband, father, and grandfather. He will be missed by his family and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife Laura Lewis Gibbons in 2007. He is survived by his daughter Billie Laura Gibbons Almond and husband Ronald of Kannapolis , his granddaughter Laura Lee Ann Almond, his sister Mildred Gibbons Brumley of Kannapolis, and a number of cousins and other relatives. A graveside service will be held at Carolina Memorial Park on Monday May 11, 2009 at 10:30 AM officiated by Rev. Gary Safrit with military honors by the Cabarrus Veterans Honor Guard.
