William “Bill” Heyworth, Jr., 79, passed away peacefully, Tuesday morning, February 4, 2020, at Atrium Health Cabarrus in Concord.
Born February 11, 1940, in New Bedford, Massachusetts, he was a son of the late William and Dorothy Smeaton Heyworth. In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by his first wife, Zelma Heyworth; a sister, Donna McVey; and a son, Charles Edward Heyworth.
Bill had honorably served his country with the US Navy from 1958-1962, where he served on the USS Rich and later the USS Shenandoah. Always an early riser and hard worker, Mr. Heyworth had professionally and personally influenced and touched the lives of many. Employed with Dixie Communications, he later owned Metrolina Communications and was a firm believer in “work smarter, not harder.” Earlier in life, Bill had coached with Broadmoor Athletic Association for many years, where he enhanced the lives of many young folks. He loved all of his family, as well as his cats, Sam, Sallie, JB, Fluff and Joe. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Family members left with cherished memories include his wife of nearly 23 years, Sue Mitchell Heyworth; his children, Darlene Truesdale (Bruce) and William Todd Heyworth (Kristie); his siblings, Dottie Judge (Bill) of Enumclaw, Washington, Barbara Hart (Stafford), of Dublin, Georgia, Malcolm "Butch" Heyworth (Linda), Charlotte, and Shirley Lewis and Carol Shomaker, both of Burlington; his grandchildren, Joshua Simmons (Erika), Jessica Spaur and Jenifer Postell (Chris); and his great-grandchildren, Zachary Spaur, Taylor Postell, Colton Simmons and Brice Postell, and many nieces and nephews.
To remember and celebrate the life of Mr. Heyworth, a gathering of family and friends will take place from 2:00-4:00 pm Saturday, February 8th, at Whitley’s Funeral Home.
