William Perry Woodard

Obituary: William Perry (Poss) Woodard, age 84, died Friday, December 7, 2012 at the Tucker Hospice House, Kannapolis, NC after a short illness. He was born March 18, 1928 in Cabarrus County, NC, the son of the late John Perry Woodard and Mary Magdalene Callicutt Woodard. Poss was employed as a brick mason having worked for the former Cannon Mills Company, Plant One, Construction Dept. for 38 years until his retirement in 1991. He was a member of North Kannapolis Baptist Church, Kannapolis, NC where he was involved in various volunteer programs including building the Kelly Watts building and the handicap ramp to the sanctuary. Poss was a veteran of the U.S. Navy where he was part of a See Bees Unit and served on the U.S.S. Haynsworth DD700 destroyer while in the Pacific. As a young man he boxed in the "Golden Gloves" competition. He also enjoyed horse trading and riding throughout the years. He was also known to enjoy playing golf at the former Kannapolis Country Club for many years. In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by a brother, Bob Woodard. A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held at 4:00 P.M. Tuesday, December 11, 2012 at North Kannapolis Baptist Church, Kannapolis, NC officiated by Rev. Chris O'Guin and Rev. Leon Hawks. Burial will be at a later date. The family will receive friends from 2:30 to 4:00 P.M. Tuesday at the church prior to the service. Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Geraldine Lewis Woodard; his children, Sharon Childress & husband, Don, Shane Woodard & wife, Trisha, and Cathy Woodard Baucom, all of Kannapolis, NC; his grandchildren, Todd Wilson, Ashley Cates & husband, Shaun, Dustin Woodard, and Heath Baucom; his great-grandchildren, Beth Wilson and Anna Wilson; one great-great-granddaughter, Gabriella Garcia ; his siblings, Frances Little of Morehead City, NC, Patty Howell of Kannapolis, NC, and Jim Woodard of Landis, NC. Memorials may be made to North Kannapolis Baptist Church, in care of the Senior Citizens Ministry, 312 Locust Street, Kannapolis, NC 28081 or Hospice & Palliative Care of Cabarrus County, 5003 Hospice Lane, Kannapolis, NC 28081.
