Obituary: William (Whit) Whitley, age 84, passed away on Tuesday, February 23, 2016 at Tucker Hospice House, Kannapolis, NC after suffering from a short illness. He was born August 27, 1931 in Cabarrus County, NC, the son of the late Robert Lewis Whitley and Virginia Elizabeth Cochran Whitley. Whit was retired from N.C. Army National Guard and the U.S. Postal Service after a total of thirty-eight years of government service. Whit was an active member of Kimball Memorial Lutheran Church, Kannapolis, NC where he served as a faithful usher, the Christian Fellowship Class, and the Wednesday Bible study. He also was an active member with Stokes Masonic Lodge, Concord, NC and the Oasis Shrine Temple through the years. His family fondly remembers him as a devoted husband and loving father. Also, he was thought of as a doting grandfather and great-grandfather. The funeral service to celebrate his life will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, February 27, 2016 at Kimball Memorial Lutheran Church, Kannapolis, NC officiated by Liz Fisher, Associate in Ministry. Burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Park, Kannapolis, NC with military honors. The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM Friday, February 26, 2016 at Whitley's Funeral Home. The family will be at the home the remainder of the time. Survivors include his wife of forty-three years, Evelyn Garris Whitley; his children, Annette Whitley Austin (Jimmy); Mel G. Thompson (Myra); R. Trent Thompson (Marlene); and Alyson Whitley; his grandchildren, Barrett Austin, Corey Thompson Davis, Erin Thompson, Kemp Thompson USCG , and Hunter Thompson; and seven great-grandchildren and one on the way!
