Obituary: William "Wimp" Winfred Whitten, age 88, of Kannapolis, went to his heavenly home Monday, November 7, 2016 from St. Andrew's Assisted Living Center after a period of declining health. A memorial service with military honors will be held at 3:00 PM Thursday at Trinity UMC with Rev. Kirk Tutterow and Rev. Josh White officiating. Burial will take place at a later date. The family will receive friends in the church parlor from 1:00 to 2:45 PM prior to the service. Mr. Whitten was born January 4, 1928 in Rowan Co., a son of the late A.G. Whitten and Mary Sherrill Whitten Puntch and was preceded in death by 2 sisters and 3 brothers. "Wimp", as he was affectionately known, was a lifelong area resident and 1945 graduate of J.W. Cannon HS. He served in the US Army, 25th Infantry in Occupied Japan. "Wimp" was retired from Cannon Mills Plant #1 as over-seer in the Dye Dept. in 1993. He was a lifelong member of Trinity United Methodist Church. "Wimp" was a Master Mason in Cannon Memorial Lodge, Scottish Rite Bodies and a Shriner at the Oasis Temple. He was a private pilot at enjoyed flying his plane and would often fly children to the Shriner's Hospital in Cincinnati. "Wimp" was a loving and devoted husband and father. He will be dearly missed. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Betty Kerr Whitten and his son, Jeff Whitten, both of Kannapolis and special friends, Vickie and Brandi Von Cannon. Betty and Jeff wish to express a very special "thank you" to the nurses and staff at St. Andrew's and Cabarrus Hospice for being "Angels" to Wimp and family.
