Obituary: Willie Washington Chandler, Jr., 65, of 905 Railroad Avenue died Wednesday, September 9, 2009 at his residence following a short illness. He was born February 17, 1944 in Madison County, Ga., son of the late Willie Washington Chandler, Sr. and Ola Mae Bratcher Chandler. . He moved to Kannapolis 45 years ago. In early life he was employed by Cannon Mills, later with Tuscarora Mill and prior to his retirement due to ill health he had worked at Furniture Dept. He was known as a "backyard mechanic" who worked on lawn mowers, cars, and anything else that needing fixing. He loved to attend auctions. He was a member of Faith Freewill Baptist Church. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Lala Faye Chandler on May 10, 1996. Two sisters also preceded him in death. He is survived by a Daughter: Lee Ann Clay and Husband David of the Home, a Son: Wayne Chandler and wife Cheryl of China Grove, a Step Daughter: Nona Childress and Husband Oren of Kannapolis and a Step-Son. Tom Bennett and wife Sabrina of China Grove. He is also survived by seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren. A memorial service will be held 1:00 P.M. Saturday, September 12, 2009 at Faith Freewill Baptist Church conducted by Rev. James Pauley, with visitation at the church 12:00-1:00 P.M. prior to the memorial service. Memorials may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of Cabarrus County, 5003 Hospice Lane, Kannapolis, NC 28081. Whitley's Funeral Home is serving the family of Mr. Chandler.
